We Celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day This Week

all-saints-dayWe celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints (All Saints Day) on Tuesday, November 1 and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) on Wednesday, November 2 with Mass at 8:00 am (our usual daily Mass time), and Rosary at 6:30 pm and Mass at 7:00 pm both evenings in our church.

These are very special days in the cultures of so many of our parishioners who come from Mexico and other Latin American countries. El Día de los Muertos or The Day of the Dead has become popularized and even commercialized in this country but we get back to the faith-filled roots of these celebrations by joining together with our families in our homes and in prayer in our church this week.

Celebrate the Feast of St. Jude Thaddeus This Week in Our Church

st-judeOur parish will host a Triduum (three days of liturgy) in honor of the feast day of St. Jude Thaddeus October 26-28 in our church at 1901 S. Ashland Avenue in Chicago.

Each evening’s schedule will include Rosary at 6:30 pm and Mass at 7:00 pm, in Spanish on Wednesday and Friday (October 26 and 28) and English on Thursday (October 27).

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Us

Friends of St. Pius V can enjoy an evening out and support St. Pius V Parish’s family counseling program by attending “Noche de Gala” at 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 12, 2016 at Crystal Sky Banquets, 7941 W. 47th Street, McCook, IL 60525.

The inclusive package includes dinner, dancing, drinks, fun activities, and admission to another theater event* this month for a donation of $100 per person. Parking is free. All are welcome!

UC Concert Choir at St. Pius V

For the second time, St. Pius V will welcome the University of Chicago Motet Choir for a soaring musical performance at 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 24, 2015 in the church at 1901 S. Ashland Ave. in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

“The performance last year was magnificent,” said Fr. Brendan Curran, OP, St. Pius V pastor. “We look forward to the same glorious music this year.”

UC Motet choir is the premiere choral ensemble at the University of Chicago. A strong grounding in the music of the Renaissance forms the foundation for a distinctive approach to a cappella masterpieces of all cultures and time periods. They have promised to perform some selections of Renaissance music from Spain and Latin America as well as some selections by contemporary composers.

The concert is a free community service of the UC Motet Choir. Donations are gratefully received. Light refreshments will be served in the parish hall following the concert.

St. Pius V Church part of Band’s Success

The Waukegan-based band, Grupo Espolon, has a new album out and their first music video features St. Pius V Church. Bajo tu manto, was taped at St. Pius V in November. The video is now available on YouTube.

“This exciting new band asked to tape their first music video at St. Pius V out of respect for all that we do for the immigrant community,” said the pastor, Father Brendan Curran, OP. “The song, under your mantle, in English, tells the story of how an elder taught a child the importance of remembering Mary’s love for the outcast and the immigrant. I’m pleased that we could help the band honor their love for Our Lady of Guadalupe in this way.”

St. Pius V Parish was founded to serve Irish immigrants in 1874 and has continued that tradition for more than 140 years. The parish ministries include an elementary school, after school program for youth, leadership training for teens, religious education, including a program for children with disabilities, and the largest parish-based domestic violence program in the country.
